Symbicort vs Advair: What's the Difference?

Looking for:

symbicort

If you have trouble inhaling from any device your doctor can help you with your technique or provide you with a spacer. Symbicort is the brand name of a drug manufactured by AstraZeneca. It is used to treat asthma and COPD in adults and children 12 years and above. Symbicort contains two active ingredients; budesonide and formoterol and are presented in a metered-dose inhaler. There is less scientific evidence about the effectiveness of these natural alternatives compared to prescription medicines. Patients should always consult a healthcare professional for medical advice before modifying their treatment plan.

These inhalers may work similarly to Symbicort and Advair, but they are not considered their equivalents. Alcohol is not known to interact with Symbicort or Advair. Chronic alcohol consumption may interfere with the immune system’s ability to fight off infections, which can develop as a result of worsening asthma or COPD. Talk to a healthcare provider about whether it is safe to drink alcohol while using Symbicort or Advair. Because they contain a corticosteroid, Symbicort and Advair may cause an increased risk of infections or decreased bone mineral density.

Possible severe side effects of ICS/LABA medications include paradoxical bronchospasm and anaphylaxis. The cause of paradoxical bronchospasm is not clearly understood. However, it may occur as a sudden onset of wheezing, shortness of breath, and cough after using an inhaler medication. Anaphylaxis may occur due to an allergy to any ingredients in Symbicort or Advair. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe rash, swelling, or trouble breathing after using a combination inhaler.

Talk with your doctor and family members or friends about deciding to join a study. To learn more about this study, you or your doctor may contact the study research staff using the contacts provided below. For general information, Learn About Clinical Studies. This study is intended to evaluate treatment effectiveness of BFC compared to FSC in COPD patients new to ICS/LABA combination therapy. The Rx Advocates, LLC does not prescribe or handle medication, increase or decrease dosages, or offer medical advice.

These drugs are similar, but they do have a few differences, such as in their active ingredients and side effects. The study is based on fluticasone propionate; salmeterol xinafoate and budesonide; formoterol fumarate dihydrate . Other drugs that have the same active ingredients (e.g. generic drugs or brand names) are also considered.

For lists of the drugs that each interacts with, see Symbicort interactions and Advair interactions. The table below highlights other differences in side effects between these two drugs. Advair is approved for use in a wider age range of people. Symbicort and Advair HFA are both approved for use in people who are 12 years or older. However, Advair Diskus is approved for use in people who are 4 years or older.

However, compared to systemic corticosteroids, inhaled corticosteroids have a lower risk of these side effects. Adrenal suppression may also occur when using high doses of Symbicort or Advair. Symbicort is used as a maintenance treatment for COPD, and it can be used to treat asthma in individuals aged 6 years and older. Advair is also used as a maintenance treatment for COPD, and it can be used to treat asthma in individuals aged 4 years and older.
